Rules and Regulations for Competitions

Africa Rise and Shine Competition is open to all talents who are not signed to a major label record company and/or its affiliates or subsidiaries. Africa Rise and Shine Competition is open to anyone African regardless of current location (within Africa or Diaspora). Employees of Africa Rise and Shine, its families, subsidiaries and affiliates are not eligible. If Contestant is under 18 years old, parent or guardian’s consent is required.

Contestant retains all ownership rights to all original song(s). Africa Rise and Shine will not have any ownership rights to any song(s) submitted.

Contestant agrees to release, indemnify, and hold Africa Rise and Shine, its sponsors, and judges harmless for liability, damages, or claims for injury or loss to any person or property relating to, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, participation in Africa Rise and Shine Competitions.

By entering Africa Rise and Shine Competition, Contestant and/or their parents or legal guardian (if such Contestant is a minor) agree to accept and be bound by the decisions of Africa Rise and Shine and its judges which are final and binding in all matters. By entering Africa Rise and Shine, Contestant agrees to be bound by all terms of these official Africa Rise and Shine Rules and Regulations as established herein.

If any provision of these Rules is found to be invalid or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction or appointed arbitrator, such determination shall in no way affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision herein.

Contestant may submit as maximum of 2 videos in each category. Contestant may also enter the same song in more than one category. It is Contestant’s responsibility to ensure that the submitted video(s) are complete and playable. All entry fees are non-refundable. Africa Rise and Shine does not give feedback or a critique to Contestants

Contestant may perform either alone or as part of a group.


The act is timed from the first vocal utterance if singing/the first body movement if dancing/the first musical sound if instrumental etc.

Vocal or Instrumental accompaniment by a person other than the performer is allowed, but is not judged. No Contestants may have live vocal backup unless they are competing as part of the act. Background vocals are allowed but cannot exceed 50% of the song.

Entry materials (CDs, tapes, and videos) submitted will not be returned to the Contestant. Africa Rise and Shine is not responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, postage due, stolen, incomplete, or misappropriated entries.
All lyrical content, dance routines and dress of any act must be appropriate for Family viewing as determined by the Judges and Producer of the Show (no profanity, sex, nudity or violence is allowed). Any acts deemed inappropriate will not be aired but disqualified.

Africa Rise and Shine reserves the right to extend the entry deadline with an increased entry fee.

Entries are screened by an Africa Rise and Shine listening committee who select a group of finalists with the aid of public voting on various online platforms. These finalists are sent to the judges who select the winners. The judges consist of high profile music industry professionals including celebrity artists and music journalists.

The 2016 winners will be announced in January 2017. Africa Rise and Shine will post all results on its website and will notify Contestants by email and whatsapp that results are posted. Contestant is responsible for providing up-to-date and correct email addresses and Whatsapp number to Africa Rise and Shine. Africa Rise and Shine is not responsible for Contestant’s non-receipt of any Africa Rise and Shine emails for any reason, including but not limited to, server or email malfunctions. Africa Rise and Shine will use its best efforts to announce the winners at the designated time but will not be held liable for any unforeseen delays. Winners will be notified by email or phone. Entry constitutes permission to use winner’s name, likeness, video and voice for future advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation.

A minimum of five mentors will be selected and put in direct contact with the winner via meeting, Skype, or telephone. The method of contact may vary from mentor to mentor, depending on scheduling. Africa Rise and Shine cannot guarantee a particular mentor’s availability, so the group of mentors includes more than five individuals in order to accommodate any unforeseen changes in labels, personnel, or other circumstances preventing a mentor from participation. Mentoring must be completed by the end of the calendar year of the competition unless a mentor’s schedule does not permit.

All prizes will be awarded to the first Contestant as it appears on the flyer, and division of prizes among artists is the responsibility of winners.

There will be no transfer and substitution of prizes except as necessary due to availability in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. All winners agree to release Africa Rise and Shine and sponsors from all liability regarding prizes won. All local taxes, and customs fees, when applicable, are the sole responsibility of winner. Africa Rise and Shine will not pay any winners’ taxes or custom’s fees. Prizes will be sent out within a reasonable amount of time, and Africa Rise and Shine will use its best efforts to send prizes out in a timely fashion. Prizes which are being sent to winners from Sponsors may take longer than prizes sent directly from Africa Rise and Shine. If after 180 days of winners being announced, any winner has not received any portion of prizes, it is winner’s responsibility to notify Africa Rise and Shine in writing within 30 days, and by certified mail, as to which prizes are outstanding. If winner fails to notify Africa Rise and Shine, Africa Rise and Shine will no longer be responsible for delivery of prizes.
